In a rare glimpse into his personal life, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl made a surprising family announcement. On September 10, Grohl revealed that he recently welcomed a daughter outside of his marriage to Jordyn Blum, with whom he shares three daughters: Violet, 18, Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10.
“I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her,” Grohl wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. “I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness.” He concluded his message by asking for privacy and respect for all children involved as they move forward together.
Grohl did not disclose any details about the identity of his newborn’s mother, keeping that part of his life under wraps. The announcement is a rare move for the rock legend, who has long kept his family life private, despite being one of the most recognizable faces in rock music.
Though Grohl, 55, typically keeps his home life away from the spotlight, he has shared glimpses of his bond with Blum, whom he married in 2003. In a 2007 interview with The Guardian, Grohl expressed how much his wife helped him find balance amid his chaotic life as a rock star.
“For the past 20 years when I’ve been touring, I’ve always craved stability,” Grohl explained. “Throughout the whole Nirvana experience, I retreated to Virginia whenever I felt sucked into the tornado of insanity. Same thing with the Foo Fighters. I wouldn’t be able to do this if I didn’t have my feet planted firmly on the ground. Jordyn and Violet are anchors that keep me from completely disappearing.”
As a dedicated father, Grohl’s priorities have shifted over the years. “I used to tour nine months out of the year,” he told TIME in 2009. “Now, I don’t like being away from my kids for more than 12 days.”
Having children, he said, has transformed him. “When you have kids, you see life through different eyes. You feel love more deeply and are maybe a little more compassionate. It’s inevitable that that would make its way into your songwriting.”
Even Grohl’s signature long hair is a point of family influence. In a 2021 interview with Vulture, Grohl joked about how his kids beg him not to cut it. “My kids are like, ‘Dad, don’t. You’re too ugly. Do not cut your f–king hair.’”
But jokes aside, Grohl is deeply connected to his family. When it comes to his most personal stories, he reserves them for his loved ones. “When it comes to things that are deeply personal, I choose to share with the ones closest to me,” he said, adding that if his daughters ever ask about his Nirvana days, he’s open to answering all of their questions.
Grohl’s latest announcement shows his commitment to being there for all his children, navigating the complexities of fatherhood while maintaining his iconic status in the rock world.
