Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is set to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot with some star-studded voice options, including none other than Dame Judi Dench and action superstar John Cena. Users will also have the chance to interact with AI versions of beloved personalities like Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kristen Bell. The exciting announcements were made by CEO Mark Zuckerberg during Meta’s annual Connect conference.
Zuckerberg emphasized the natural progression of AI interactions, stating, “I think that voice is going to be a way more natural way of interacting with AI than text.” In addition to the celebrity voices, the updated chatbot will feature impressive capabilities, such as recognizing objects in user photographs and providing detailed information about them. An innovative image editing feature will also allow users to request changes to their photos simply by telling the Meta AI what they envision.
The popularity of Meta AI is on the rise, with over 400 million users engaging with the platform monthly, and a whopping 185 million returning each week for more interaction.
At the conference, Zuckerberg also unveiled a working prototype of Meta’s augmented-reality (AR) glasses, named Orion. He described the feedback from attendees as overwhelmingly positive, saying, “A lot of people have said this is the craziest technology they’ve ever seen.” The Orion glasses will allow users to interact through hand-tracking, voice commands, and a wrist-based interface, promising a seamless blend of the digital and physical worlds.
Additionally, Meta announced an entry-level version of its popular Quest line of mixed-reality headsets, with the new Quest 3S starting at an accessible price of $300 (£225). While many tech giants have explored AR glasses, none have yet launched a commercially successful product, leaving the door wide open for Meta’s innovation.
With billions invested in AI, AR, and other metaverse technologies, Meta is pushing the envelope in tech advancements. The company anticipates spending as much as $40 billion on new projects this year—a record high. Following these bold announcements, Meta’s shares have soared, closing Wednesday’s trading at a record high of $568.31, reflecting an impressive 60% increase in stock market value since the start of the year.
