Tom Paul-Martin, a filmmaker whose journey began with a school talent show in 2007, is making waves with his latest project Where Are All the Gay Superheroes?, a short film tackling LGBTQ+ representation and the challenges faced by gay people in positions of power.
Inspired by a pivotal moment at Droitwich High School when he realized his love for film, Martin has now created a project that resonates deeply with contemporary issues.
The film explores how gay individuals, especially those in high-profile professions like athletes, celebrities, and politicians, often hide their identities due to fears of career repercussions.
However, Martin chose to present these themes through the lens of superheroes, saying, “Because that’s fun. There are big costumes, robots, CGI, and all that kind of stuff.” The film stars Rory Fleck-Byrne (This is Going to Hurt) and Imran Adams (Hollyoaks), both of whom Martin recruited through their agents after they responded positively to his script.
Where Are All the Gay Superheroes? is set to be showcased at the Worcester Film Festival, where it has been nominated for three awards: Best Costume Designer, Best Editor, and Best Sound Design.
Martin emphasizes the importance of events like the film festival as a platform for new filmmakers to showcase their work.
Reflecting on his own filmmaking journey, Martin advises aspiring directors to keep creating, stating, “Make content… just create, learn from it, and move on.” He also encourages young filmmakers to think bigger and not be deterred by inexperience, as actors and crew members may still want to collaborate if they find the story compelling.
