Singer-songwriter Tom Grennan made a heartfelt return to Coventry on Thursday, busking to raise funds for the Big Issue, a magazine dedicated to supporting homeless individuals. The 29-year-old artist, who announced his performance last week, delighted hundreds of fans at the creative and commercial hub, FarGo Village, where he debuted his new single, Higher.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve done any busking,” Grennan shared. “We’re here doing it for the Big Issue, and I’m very, very honored to be a part of that.”
In a special touch, Grennan brought along his grandmother, Anne, who showed him her childhood home in Canley—a moment they had never experienced together before. “It was lovely to see where my grandma was born and raised,” he said. “Grandma was part of Coventry, and still is a part of Coventry.”
When asked about the most surprising thing he learned about Anne, Grennan responded with a laugh, “That she was a roller-blader.” Anne corrected him, saying, “Roller-skater! We used to skate down Glendower Avenue… it’s quite a steep hill.”
Grennan expressed his admiration for the Big Issue’s impact, stating, “The Big Issue helps so many people across the UK with money, with jobs, with everything. And for my face to be on the cover of it… it’s mad for me.”
He also shared his love for Coventry, emphasizing the sense of community that makes the city special. “People are turning up, and that’s the sense, that’s the love, and that’s the spirit of this place.”
