The Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate has teamed up with Pilgrims Hospices to offer creative activities that bring joy and art into the lives of hospice patients.
Through their collaborative “Look Club,” individuals living with life-limiting illnesses can explore art exhibitions and engage in meaningful discussions with the gallery’s team, creating a unique and uplifting experience.
Brian Hodgson, 77, from Broadstairs, who was referred to the hospice by his neurologist, described the sessions as a “special and emotional experience” that allowed him to connect deeply with artists and their work.
Pilgrims Hospices also offers “Living Well” sessions, which provide social, creative, and educational activities for patients and their families.
These initiatives aim to show the “transformative power of art in healthcare settings,” according to Turner Contemporary.
By encouraging creative expression and social interaction, the partnership is helping to challenge the perception of hospices as solely end-of-life care facilities.
The “Look Club” first launched in 2020 in response to the social isolation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since then, the program has adapted to ensure accessibility, offering creative workshops, online discussions, and even mailed art packs, allowing participants to engage with art in various ways.
