Lupita Nyong’o has officially confirmed her single status, revealing that her only love at the moment is her cat, Yoyo.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK published on October 9, the Oscar-winning actress discussed her newfound independence, stating, “My love for my cat is singular. If I’m ever so lucky to be in a romantic relationship again, it’ll be because of him.”
The actress adopted Yoyo from the Best Friends Animal Society in October 2023, coinciding with her budding romance with Dawson’s Creek star Joshua Jackson, which began making headlines when they were spotted together at a Janelle Monáe concert.
Their relationship deepened with a vacation to Mexico in March, where they celebrated Lupita’s 41st birthday with affectionate public displays.
Joshua Jackson’s previous marriage to model Jodie Turner-Smith ended last year, with their official separation date listed as September 13, 2023, according to court documents.
Lupita’s romantic history includes a year-long relationship with sports commentator Selema Masekela, which ended in October 2023 due to trust issues.
In an emotional Instagram Story, she expressed the pain of heartbreak, noting, “It is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust.”
Reflecting on her breakup with Selema, Lupita emphasized that it served as an opportunity for self-discovery.
She shared her thoughts on the signs she may have overlooked during their relationship, admitting to the difficulty of processing heartbreak under the public eye.
“I think it’s hard enough to go through heartbreak privately,” she explained. “When the world has an image of you in relation to someone else, it prolongs the healing process because the memory is emblazoned in the public domain.”
