In a delightful surprise for fans, Timothée Chalamet made an unexpected appearance at a lookalike contest dedicated to himself in New York City.
The Wonka star drew a crowd of excited fans at Washington Square Park, where he posed for photos alongside his curly-haired doppelgängers during a brief, high-energy visit.
The event, organized by YouTuber Anthony Po, had offered a $50 (£39) prize to the best Chalamet lookalike and saw thousands of RSVPs after its announcement. The crowd swelled quickly, prompting the city’s police to disperse the large gathering.
Chalamet slipped through the throngs of fans, initially concealed behind a mask and baseball cap, before sneaking up on two lookalikes, causing a wave of excitement and shrieks across the park, as reported by Variety.
Lauren Klas, a dedicated fan of the Call Me by Your Name and Dune actor, shared what makes a convincing Chalamet: “It’s all in the nose,” she told the AP news agency, adding that “all of his bone structure” contributes to the iconic look.
Contestants were quizzed on their French language skills, their ideas for making a positive impact, and even their thoughts on romantic interests, as Chalamet is rumored to be dating Kylie Jenner, according to AP.
Ultimately, 21-year-old Miles Mitchell from Staten Island won the contest, dressed in a Willy Wonka costume and throwing candy to the crowd from a briefcase in a playful nod to Chalamet’s upcoming role.
Adding to the buzz around the actor, a trailer for Chalamet’s latest project, A Complete Unknown, was released earlier this month.
The biopic, set in the 1960s, follows Bob Dylan’s rise to fame and is scheduled to hit theaters in December in the U.S. and January in the U.K.
