Pamela Hayden, the talented actress behind the voice of Milhouse Van Houten on The Simpsons, has announced her retirement from the iconic animated series.
Hayden, 70, has been a staple of the show since its debut in 1989, contributing her voice to nearly 700 episodes.
“The time has come for me to hang up my microphone,” Hayden said in a heartfelt statement. “It’s been an honor and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show.
I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that blue-haired 10-year-old boy with glasses.”
Producers of The Simpsons plan to recast the role in the coming months. Milhouse, a beloved recurring character for the past 35 years, is best known as Bart Simpson’s loyal best friend.
Shy and often the target of bullies, Milhouse’s personality is a blend of vulnerability and resilience, making him a fan favorite.
Hayden also voiced several other characters on the show, including Ned Flanders’ sons Rod and Todd, school bully Jimbo Jones, Lisa Simpson’s friend Janey, and Sarah Wiggum, the wife of Chief Wiggum.
However, Milhouse remained her most iconic role.
Reflecting on her time as Milhouse, Hayden shared in a farewell video how deeply connected she feels to the character.
“People are always saying what a nerd he is, but one thing I love about Milhouse is he’s always getting knocked down, but he keeps getting up. I love the little guy. It’s this wonderful analogy for life,” she said.
The show’s creator, Matt Groening, paid tribute to Hayden’s contributions.
“Pamela gave us tons of laughs with Milhouse, the hapless kid with the biggest nose in Springfield. She made Milhouse hilarious and real, and we will miss her.”
Interestingly, the character of Milhouse was named after former U.S. President Richard Milhous Nixon, adding a historical twist to his quirky persona.
Hayden’s departure marks the end of an era for The Simpsons, but her legacy as Milhouse and her other characters will continue to bring joy to fans around the world.
