Cheltenham screenwriter Jon Foster has expressed his gratitude and excitement for co-writing the latest Paddington movie, Paddington in Peru.
Released in UK cinemas on November 8, the film follows the beloved bear as he returns to his homeland, Peru, in a heartwarming new adventure.
Foster, who hails from Charlton Kings, is no stranger to the iconic character, having previously co-written Paddington’s memorable skit with the late Queen for her Platinum Jubilee.
“It’s one of the best moments of a screenwriter’s job to see fantastic actors bring your words to life,” he shared.
More than three years ago, Foster and his writing partner, James Lamont, were approached to co-write the new film alongside the existing team.
“We were delighted, but that quickly turned into, ‘How are we going to do this?’” Foster admitted.
Crafting the script was a meticulous process.
“The script is so important because it’s what draws the actors to the project, turning it into a film ready to be made,” he explained.
Foster revealed that when writing, he “absolutely” hears the voice of actor Ben Whishaw, who has brought Paddington to life in the previous films.
“Ben is brilliant and feels protective of Paddington, just as we all do. It’s like the bear’s famous luggage tag says: ‘Please look after this bear.’ That’s how we all feel working with him,” he said.
For Foster, the highlight of the process was visiting the set.
“Seeing amazing actors perform your lines, hearing them laugh, and watching your jokes land is why you get into this game,” he shared.
Reflecting on his journey with Paddington, Foster called the experience “a great privilege.” He added, “I’m very lucky to be part of such a special project that brings so much joy.”
