Chris Brown has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros and production company Ample, following the release of a documentary that included allegations of sexual assault.
The film, Chris Brown: A History of Violence, premiered in October 2023 and featured testimony from an anonymous dancer who accused the singer of raping her on a yacht in 2020.
Brown’s legal team has denounced the documentary as “defamatory,” calling the dancer’s claims “baseless” and “sensationalized.”
They accuse Warner Bros of “recklessly damaging” Brown’s reputation and say that the film company prioritized profit over journalistic integrity.
The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday in Los Angeles, demands $500 million in damages.
The complaint outlines three specific claims in the documentary that Brown’s lawyers argue are false: a statement about Brown having a “predisposition for punching women in the face,” the rape allegation by the dancer, and accusations that he tampered with or deleted texts between them before sharing them with police.
According to the legal filing, the documentary “states in every available fashion that he is a serial rapist and sexual abuser,” causing Brown significant emotional distress and irreparable damage to his career and public image.
This lawsuit follows a previous legal battle in 2022 when the dancer, known as Jane Doe in the documentary and court filings, sued Brown for $20 million, claiming that he drugged and raped her at a party on a yacht owned by Sean “Diddy” Combs in Miami.
The case was reportedly dismissed by a judge.
Brown, 35, has faced numerous legal issues in the past, including a 2009 assault conviction for attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna.
In 2014, he pleaded guilty to punching a man outside a hotel in Washington, D.C., and in 2016, he faced assault allegations from a model in Las Vegas, though charges were not brought.
He was also ordered to stay away from ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran in 2017 after she accused him of threatening her.
The documentary also revisited other controversies, including a rape inquiry in Paris, in which Brown was released without charge.
Despite these allegations, Brown’s lawyers argue that he has “never been found at fault for any type of sexual crime.”
Brown’s lawyer, Levi McCathern, stated that Warner Bros and Ample’s actions not only undermine Brown’s efforts to rebuild his life but also harm the credibility of true survivors of violence.
As part of the lawsuit, Brown has pledged to donate a portion of any damages to survivors of sexual violence.
