LeBron James has made history once again, this time not on the court but in the toy aisle.
Mattel has unveiled a new Barbie doll modeled in the likeness of the basketball superstar, marking him as the first professional male athlete to be represented as a Ken doll.
Krista Berger, Mattel’s senior vice president of Barbie, expressed excitement over the release, stating that the doll celebrates LeBron as a role model who transcends culture and provides a positive example for future generations.
The figure captures James’ signature pre-game style and even reflects his real-life height—standing an inch taller than the standard Ken doll to represent his 6’9″ frame.
This release comes during a period of financial uncertainty for Mattel.
The company, which produces nearly 40% of its toys in China, faces challenges following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of increased tariffs on Chinese goods—rising to 125%. Beijing responded with an 84% tariff on U.S. imports.
In the same address, Trump temporarily paused the increased tariffs for some countries and introduced a universal reduced tariff of 10% as negotiations continued.
Mattel has indicated it may have to raise prices or alter its supply chain in response to these developments.
The LeBron Ken doll skips the typical basketball uniform and instead features him in a varsity jacket emblazoned with “LJ” on the front, an Ohio patch, a crown patch, and his iconic number 23 on the sleeves.
The back of the jacket boldly states “LeBron” along with the phrase “Just a kid from Akron,” a tribute to his hometown in Ohio.
Beneath the jacket is a shirt that reads “We Are Family,” honoring the mission of the LeBron James Family Foundation. The doll also includes accessories like headphones, a basketball, and sneakers.
In a promotional video, LeBron was visibly impressed upon seeing the doll for the first time. “Oh, he dope!” he exclaimed, laughing as he examined the figure’s features.
He joked that the doll “might have to do a little lifting” because the legs looked skinny.
This move marks a significant milestone for the Barbie brand, which has worked to diversify its dolls to include a wide range of body types, backgrounds, and professions.
While Barbie has previously featured athletes such as Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, and Megan Rapinoe, LeBron James is the first male sports figure—and the first male outside the entertainment industry—to be included in the Barbie lineup.
Despite his storied basketball career, including four NBA championships, two Olympic gold medals, and an all-time scoring record, LeBron says this recognition holds unique value.
Being named a “Kenbassador” is about more than accolades—it’s about inspiring the next generation to dream big and believe in their potential.
