Family, friends, and stars from across the entertainment world came together in North Wales on Monday to bid farewell to James Lee Williams, widely celebrated as The Vivienne, the drag queen who captured hearts on the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. Williams passed away earlier this month at the age of 32.
The funeral, held at St Margaret’s Church in Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire, near where Williams grew up, was a poignant celebration of their life and legacy.
The coffin arrived in a horse-drawn carriage adorned with black horses wearing green plumes.
Floral tributes spelled out “Vivienne,” “James,” and “Son,” while the crown and scepter awarded to winners of RuPaul’s Drag Race were carried into the church ahead of the coffin.
A host of celebrities attended the service to honor The Vivienne’s memory, including singers Jade Thirlwall of Little Mix and Ian “H” Watkins from Steps, drag queens Cheryl Hole, Baga Chipz, and Danny Beard, and TV personalities Kim Woodburn and Kerry Katona.
Former Drag Race contestants Veronica Green and Tia Kofi also paid their respects, along with actresses Claire Sweeney and Jennifer Ellison.
Aston Merrygold from JLS, who starred alongside The Vivienne in last year’s stage production of The Wizard of Oz, was also present.
Speaking after the service, Kim Woodburn reflected on The Vivienne’s uncanny impersonation of her on Drag Race UK, saying, “A lovely young man. A sad loss. I’m proud to be here today.”
The Vivienne first rose to fame after winning the inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019.
Their razor-sharp impressions of figures like Donald Trump, Margaret Thatcher, and Woodburn earned them widespread acclaim.
They went on to become the first UK contestant to compete on the US version of the show, appearing in RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 7.
Beyond the drag world, The Vivienne showcased their talent in mainstream television, appearing on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Dancing on Ice, and a Christmas special of Blankety Blank.
They even made a guest appearance on Emmerdale and received critical praise for their portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz UK and Ireland tour.
The news of Williams’ passing earlier this month prompted an outpouring of grief from fans, peers, and the LGBTQ+ community.
Tributes poured in from global icons like Ariana Grande, Drag Race host RuPaul, and judge Michelle Visage. In Liverpool, public buildings were illuminated in green to honor The Vivienne’s role as the Wicked Witch, and hundreds gathered for a public vigil filled with music and heartfelt tributes.
Sahir House, a Liverpool-based charity Williams passionately supported, saw an influx of donations in their memory.
A book of condolences, initially opened at The Museum of Liverpool, has been handed to the family.
As white doves were released on the lawn outside the church following the service, those in attendance reflected on the incredible journey of a performer who brought joy, laughter, and inspiration to so many.
The Vivienne leaves behind a legacy of creativity, compassion, and a spirit that will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
