“Come Get Your Wife” is the third studio album by Elle King, an American singer-songwriter and musician. Released on January 27, 2023, via RCA Records, this album marks King’s return since her previous release, “Shake the Spirit,” in 2018. The album was co-produced by King and Ross Copperman and features two pre-release singles, “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” and “Worth a Shot.” Among the album’s thirteen tracks, King co-wrote eight of them.
Background: The album title, “Come Get Your Wife,” originated from a phrase country singer Chris Young shouted to King’s partner during their participation in “wild bar games” while filming the show Barmageddon. King humorously mentioned in an Instagram caption, “Thanks for the album title, babe,” along with the statement, “Each track draws influences from various genres, and I’ve discovered that country music is where I truly belong.” King further described the album as a compilation of diverse elements that may not seem cohesive at first glance but come together harmoniously, reflecting her Southern Ohio roots and resonating with people who share similar experiences.
Regarding the album’s creation, King explained that after the success of her single “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home),” her team advised her to commit to a full-fledged country album to maintain her level of success and radio play in the genre. Initially, this concerned her as she had just finished recording a pop-leaning album with producer Greg Kurstin, which she decided not to release in favor of working on “Come Get Your Wife.” Despite recently giving birth to her son, King was advised against taking time off, as it could jeopardize her chance to capitalize on her recent achievements.
As a result, she collaborated with the rich songwriting community in Nashville to find suitable songs for the album, complementing the ones she had already written. While initially pitched songs tailored for female artists, King felt they didn’t align with her artistic vibe. Instead, she requested songs written for male artists or suitable for artists of any gender. Impressed by the song “Out Yonder,” King invited the writers Ella Langley, Bobby Hamrick, and Matt McKinney onto her tour bus for two days to collaborate, resulting in four songs for the project. Ultimately, King and producer Ross Copperman recorded the majority of the album live with the band over a span of two days.
