The founders of PinkNews, the world’s largest LGBT news website, have been accused by former staff of misconduct, including allegations of sexual harassment and bullying.
Several ex-employees told the BBC they witnessed Anthony James, the company’s chief operating officer and husband of founder Benjamin Cohen, behaving inappropriately toward a junior staff member who appeared too intoxicated to consent.
More than 30 current and former staff members described a workplace culture involving heavy drinking, where younger male employees reportedly faced unwanted advances.
Dr. James and Mr. Cohen, supported by family members within the company’s leadership, did not provide a statement but reportedly denied the allegations.
Staff members recalled feeling unsafe around the couple, claiming a toxic culture characterized by emotional manipulation and verbal abuse.
Some young female employees said they were uncomfortably asked to act as surrogates, allegedly framed as jokes.
Accounts from former staff included specific incidents of misconduct at company events, including unwanted physical contact and inappropriate propositions.
Witnesses claimed they were afraid to report concerns due to the couple’s influence and prominence in the industry.
Private messages, official complaints, and doctors’ records detailing mental health struggles attributed to the work environment were reviewed by the BBC.
The accusations have raised questions about leadership accountability at PinkNews, despite its historic role in promoting LGBT rights.
Former staff expressed hope that reforms could restore the platform’s credibility as a trusted source of queer-led journalism.
