James Van Der Beek, the 47-year-old actor famous for his roles in Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, has revealed his recent battle with colorectal cancer.
In an interview with People magazine, Van Der Beek opened up about his diagnosis and the treatments he has been undergoing.
“I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it,” he shared.
The actor expressed hope, stating there is reason for “optimism” and that he is “feeling good.”
Colorectal cancer, as noted by the Cleveland Clinic, originates from growths within the inner lining of the colon. If left untreated, the cancer can spread.
Statistics show men are more likely to develop this cancer than women.
However, advancements in screening have improved early detection rates, which has significantly reduced mortality.
Van Der Beek rose to fame in the late ’90s and early 2000s, notably as Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek, which aired from 1998 to 2003.
He also portrayed a fictionalized version of himself in the cult TV show Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and appeared on Dancing with the Stars in its 28th U.S. season.
Despite his diagnosis, Van Der Beek has continued working on new projects.
Two productions are currently in progress, including Sidelined: The QB and Me, a Tubi original film set to release later this month.
