Akina Nakamori (中森 明菜, Nakamori Akina, born July 13, 1965) is a highly acclaimed Japanese singer and actress, known for her immense popularity and record-breaking sales in Japan. Her journey to stardom began with a triumph in the 1981 edition of the talent show Star Tanjō!, propelling her into the spotlight.
The debut single “Slow Motion” marked the initial steps of her career, achieving moderate success by reaching number thirty on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart. However, it was the follow-up single, “Shōjo A,” that truly elevated her status, securing the number five position on the Oricon charts and selling over 390,000 copies. Nakamori’s momentum surged further with the release of her second album, “Variation,” which claimed the top spot on the Oricon Weekly Albums Chart for an impressive three weeks.
Beyond her musical accomplishments, Nakamori showcased her acting prowess with her debut appearance in the Japanese romance movie “Ai, Tabidachi” in 1985. This demonstrated her versatility and solidified her reputation as a multifaceted artist.
Following a hiatus from 2010 to 2014, Akina made a triumphant return to the music scene, releasing two commercially successful compilation albums: “All Time Best: Original” and “All Time Best: Utahime Cover.”
As of 2011, Nakamori’s record sales exceeded an astounding 25.3 million units, solidifying her position as the third best-selling female Japanese idol singer of all time.
Born in Ōta, Tokyo, on July 13, 1965, Akina Nakamori was the fifth child and third daughter among six siblings. Her father, Akio Nakamori, owned a meat shop, and the family later moved to Kiyose, Tokyo, where she spent her formative years.
Her mother, an avid fan of Hibari Misora, instilled in Nakamori a love for music and singing from a young age. Her mother’s influence played a significant role in shaping her dreams of becoming a singer.
The name “Akina,” meaning “a bright nanohana flower,” was lovingly given to her by her mother. Tragically, Nakamori’s younger sister, Akiho Nakamori, who also pursued a career in acting, passed away in 2019 at the age of 52, leaving behind a legacy of artistic passion.
