Alexander Giannascoli, widely known by his stage names Alex G or (Sandy) Alex G, is a renowned American musician, producer, and singer-songwriter. His musical journey began with self-releases on Bandcamp, gradually building a devoted audience.
He gained critical acclaim with his label debut, DSU (2014), released on Orchid Tapes. Subsequently, Lucky Number signed him, reissuing his previous works, Rules, and Trick (2012).
In 2015, Domino Recording Company welcomed him, and he released his sixth studio album, Beach Music. Alex G’s musical prowess further shone in his seventh album, Rocket (2017), receiving widespread recognition.
Born in 1993 in Havertown, Pennsylvania, Giannascoli discovered his passion for music at age 11, when he started playing his brother’s guitar and recording his compositions. During his time at Haverford High School, he experimented with various musical styles and collaborated with different bands, displaying versatility and creativity.
Eventually, Giannascoli enrolled in Temple University to study English but decided to pursue a full-time musical career, captivated by the growing interest in his self-released Bandcamp projects.
Giannascoli’s popularity continued to soar, gaining praise from blogs, word of mouth, and fellow musicians. Orchid Tapes signed him and released DSU (2014), leading to successful tours across North America and Europe.
Lucky Number later reissued his previous works, Rules and Trick. In 2015, he joined forces with Domino Recording Company and released Beach Music, showcasing his talent on a larger scale. Collaborating with Frank Ocean on albums Endless and Blonde further solidified his position as a prominent musician.
His second album under Domino, Rocket (2017), was met with critical acclaim. A stage name change from Alex G to (Sandy) Alex G occurred during this period due to a legal conflict, yet it did not hinder his musical brilliance. The album received positive reviews and secured a spot on several year-end best albums lists.
Giannascoli’s eighth studio album, House of Sugar, delighted fans and critics alike, ranking 17th on Pitchfork’s year-end best albums list in 2019. In 2020, he reverted to being known as Alex G, without the “Sandy” in his stage name.
Apart from his albums, Giannascoli’s musical talents extended to film scoring, as seen in the movie “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair,” released in April 2022.
His ninth studio album, “God Save the Animals,” was unveiled on September 23, 2022, showcasing his continual evolution as an artist.
Alexander Giannascoli’s musical journey has been marked by innovation, critical acclaim, and a dedicated fan base, making him a prominent figure in the contemporary music scene.
