Beth Gibbons is a renowned English singer and songwriter known for her work with the band Portishead. Born on January 4, 1965, in Exeter, Devon, England, she grew up on a farm with three sisters after her parents’ divorce. Her musical journey started when she moved to Bath and later to Bristol at the age of 22 to pursue a singing career. It was in Bristol that she met Geoff Barrow, her future collaborator in Portishead, during an Enterprise Allowance course in 1991.
Gibbons, along with Barrow and Adrian Utley, released their debut album “Dummy” in 1994, which was followed by two other studio albums, a live album, and several singles over the years. Apart from her work with Portishead, she embarked on a separate project with former Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb, resulting in the album “Out of Season” released in October 2002 under the name Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man. The album was well-received, peaking at number 28 on the UK Albums Chart and gaining praise for Gibbons’ unique vocal style.
Throughout her career, Beth Gibbons has collaborated with various artists and bands, showcasing her versatile talent. Notably, she contributed her vocals to a cover of the song “Black Sabbath” with the British metal band Gonga in 2014.
