Deftones, a renowned American alternative metal band, originated in Sacramento, California back in 1988. Founded by Chino Moreno (vocals, guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums), and Dominic Garcia (bass), the band experienced some lineup changes during their initial five years. However, in 1993, the lineup stabilized with Cunningham’s return, and Chi Cheng took on the role of bassist.
This stable formation endured for fifteen years, and in 1999, the band added keyboardist and turntablist Frank Delgado to the mix. Critics have hailed their music as experimental, often comparing them to “the Radiohead of metal.”
Over the years, Deftones have released an impressive total of nine albums. After settling on their lineup in 1993, the band signed with Maverick Records and debuted their first album, “Adrenaline,” in 1995. By actively touring and collaborating with other bands in the scene, Deftones garnered a dedicated fan base primarily through word of mouth.
“Around the Fur,” their second album released in 1997, not only achieved notable chart positions but also earned RIAA certification for its singles, marking the band’s first major recognition.
However, it was with their third album, “White Pony,” released in 2000, that Deftones reached new heights. The album showcased a shift from their earlier aggressive sound to a more experimental direction, and its lead single, “Change (In the House of Flies),” proved to be a commercial triumph. The track “Elite” even secured a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, and “White Pony” was certified platinum, setting a new milestone for the band.
In 2003, Deftones released their self-titled fourth album. While their critical acclaim continued, the album’s sales fell short compared to the immense success of “White Pony.” The band’s fifth studio effort, “Saturday Night Wrist,” arrived in 2006, garnering critical acclaim despite facing challenges related to creative tensions and personal issues within the group, which subtly influenced the album’s material.
In 2008, during the production of an album tentatively titled “Eros,” the band faced a tragic incident. Bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a serious traffic collision, leading to a minimally conscious state until his eventual passing in 2013 due to cardiac arrest.
Following this devastating event, Deftones put the production of “Eros” on hold. Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega, who had previously filled in as a touring member for Cheng, later became his permanent replacement, although the official membership status was a subject of contention according to Vega.
