Kool & the Gang, an iconic American R&B, soul, and funk band, was established in 1964 in Jersey City, New Jersey, by visionary brothers Robert “Kool” Bell and Ronald Bell, along with Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Robert “Spike” Mickens, Charles Smith, George Brown, Woodrow “Woody” Sparrow, and Ricky West.
Over the years, the band has undergone shifts in membership and embraced diverse musical genres, including jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, disco, rock, and pop. Once they settled on their name, the group inked a deal with De-Lite Records and introduced their inaugural album, “Kool and the Gang,” in 1969.
The band’s initial taste of triumph arrived with the launch of their fourth album, “Wild and Peaceful,” in 1973. This pivotal release featured chart-topping hits like “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging,” propelling Kool & the Gang to the forefront.
Following a brief slump, the band experienced a remarkable resurgence between 1979 and 1986, sparked by their collaboration with Brazilian maestro and producer Eumir Deodato, along with the addition of singer James “J.T.” Taylor to the lineup. Noteworthy albums from this period encompass “Ladies’ Night” (1979), “Celebrate!” (1980), and “Emergency” (1984), which garnered exceptional success, with “Emergency” amassing an impressive two million copies sold in the US.
Pioneering singles during this era encompassed “Ladies’ Night,” the chart-topping “Celebration,” “Get Down on It,” “Joanna,” “Misled,” and “Cherish.” The band’s global presence remains steadfast, including noteworthy performances such as supporting Van Halen in 2012 and commemorating their 50th anniversary with a tour in 2014.
Accolades have showered upon Kool & the Gang, with highlights including two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, and a coveted Music Business Association Chairman’s Award for artistic excellence in 2006. The band’s contributions have been acknowledged through induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, reception of the Mobo Award for Outstanding Achievement, the Soul Train Legend Award, the Marian Anderson Award, and the honor of a star on the renowned Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2007, the band secured their place in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
Notably, in 2018, the Bells, Brown, and Taylor received induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific discography featuring 23 studio albums and nearly 70 singles characterizes their musical journey. Impressively, Kool & the Gang have achieved RIAA-certified sales of 7.5 million albums and 4.5 million singles in the US alone. Globally, their influence has resonated with 70 million album sales, solidifying their legacy as musical trailblazers.
