Metro Boomin, born Leland Tyler Wayne, born on September 16, 1993, is an accomplished American record producer, record executive, and DJ, widely recognized by his professional alias Metro Boomin. His distinctively dark production style has left an indelible mark on the landscape of modern hip hop and trap music. Metro Boomin has garnered significant acclaim in the industry, partly due to his signature producer tags: “If Young Metro don’t trust you, I’m gon’ shoot you” and “Metro Boomin want some more, nigga,” voiced by his frequent collaborators Future and Young Thug. Noteworthy artists he has collaborated with include The Weeknd, 21 Savage, Drake, Travis Scott, Swae Lee, and Kanye West.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Wayne embarked on his music career at the age of 16 as a producer in 2009. In 2011, he relocated to Atlanta to pursue higher education at Morehouse College while simultaneously working extensively with prominent Atlanta-based artists such as Future, Young Thug, 21 Savage, Gucci Mane, and Migos. Metro Boomin achieved mainstream recognition after his production work on the song “Tuesday” by iLoveMakonnen and Drake, which peaked at number 12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Subsequently, he produced the popular U.S. top-20 singles “Jumpman” by Drake and Future, “Low Life” by Future featuring The Weeknd, and earned his first number one hit with “Bad and Boujee” by Migos. His remarkable track record continued with chart-topping hits like “Congratulations” by Post Malone, “Tunnel Vision” by Kodak Black, “Mask Off” by Future, “Bank Account” by 21 Savage, and his second U.S. number one, “Heartless” by The Weeknd.
Throughout his career, Wayne has released several collaborative projects, including Savage Mode (2016) and Savage Mode II (2020) with 21 Savage, DropTopWop (2017) with Gucci Mane, Perfect Timing (2017) with Nav, and Double or Nothing (2017) with Big Sean. His debut studio album, Not All Heroes Wear Capes (2018), and its follow-up, Heroes & Villains (2022), both debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The latter album gave rise to the hit single “Creepin,” featuring The Weeknd and 21 Savage, which achieved widespread success by reaching the top ten in multiple countries, including the United States, where it peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100—marking Metro Boomin’s highest-charting single in the U.S. to date.
