Selah is a contemporary Christian vocal trio comprising Todd Smith, Allan Hall, and Amy Perry. They have been featured on prominent shows like The 700 Club, Hour of Power, and TBN. The group’s journey began in 1997 when siblings Todd and Nicol Smith (now Nicol Sponberg) joined forces with friend Allan Hall. Their debut album, “Be Still My Soul” (1999), marked a significant success, as they revitalized traditional Christian hymns with modern arrangements and showcased their captivating harmonies.
Having spent their childhood in Subsaharan Africa, Todd and Nicol infused African elements into their music, comfortably singing in Kituba and English. Todd credits his musical upbringing to his missionary parents, who introduced him to performing from a young age during church visits. Selah also gained recognition for their covers of well-known songs like “You Raise Me Up” and “Bless the Broken Road.” Notably, they earned a Dove Award for their debut album.
Following the release of their second album, “Press On” (2001), Selah received another Dove Award and multiple nominations for individual songs on the album. In 2000, Nicol Smith embarked on a solo career, releasing her self-titled debut album and later “Resurrection” in 2004. Around the same time, Todd also ventured into a solo project, releasing “Alive” in 2004.
In 2005, Nicol left the group, and Melodie Crittenden sang with Selah for most of the year. The 2006 album “Bless the Broken Road” saw original Selah members Todd Smith and Allan Hall collaborate with various guest singers.
In 2014, Selah presented “You Amaze Us,” with its title track debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian Soft AC chart, making history as the first song to achieve this feat. The track remained at No. 1 for 12 consecutive weeks. During this time, Amy Perry and Allan Hall also pursued solo endeavors, releasing albums “Glory All Around” and “Work of Love,” respectively.
The group’s resilience and ability to adapt to new talent and musical influences have been key to their enduring success in the Christian music scene.
