Deante Adam Johnson, professionally known as Summrs, is a prominent American rapper, singer, and songwriter hailing from Louisiana. He has played a pivotal role in pioneering and popularizing the pluggnb genre. As a key member of the Slayworld collective during its active years, Summrs has consistently delivered noteworthy music.
Born on November 18, 1999, in Lafayette, Louisiana, Summrs shared a close bond with his late maternal grandmother, Brenda, which he fondly references in his tracks, like “Mudd Bruddas.” He also shares a musical connection with his friend and collaborator, Autumn!, who, like Summrs, hails from Louisiana and together, they ventured into music that deviates from the “NBA YoungBoy type music.”
Summrs gained considerable recognition with the release of his “All Summr” mixtape series in 2017, marking his initial significant breakthrough in the music scene. Subsequently, in 2018, he further rose to prominence within the “Pluggnb” subgenre, showcasing his talent through a series of well-received projects, including “##ENDEAVOUR777,” “DEVOTION,” “##Bellworld,” “##Bellworld 2,” “No Regrets,” and “Revived.” Among his 2018 hits were “Packrunner Bitch” and “Prelude.”
As he continued to evolve artistically, 2019 saw Summrs’ growth in popularity with an array of singles and the release of his 15-track album “Isolation” on October 15, 2019. The album showcased a darker and more somber side of his music, with tracks like “test sum” and “Greenlight” receiving significant attention.
While 2020 did not witness a full-length project, Summrs kept his fans engaged with several singles, eagerly awaiting his forthcoming album, “Intoxicated,” which ultimately dropped on March 13, 2021. The album’s standout track, “Z06,” catapulted Summrs’ career to new heights of popularity. Later, he followed up with a 6-track EP titled “What We Have” on June 13 of the same year, including the hit track “just cant.” In September 2021, he released the full-length album “Nothing more Nothing LESS,” with one of its popular tracks being “Back 2 Da Basics.”
Collaborations also played a role in Summrs’ success, as evidenced by his appearances on various tracks with artists like TyFontaine, Yeat, 1Mill, and Lamont Galore. Additionally, his album “Fallen Raven,” released in June 2022, featured hit songs “Swing Ya Pole” and “So Much Cheese,” garnering further mainstream attention.
Amidst promotion through his label, Goth Money Record$, Summrs unveiled his 7th album, “Stuck In My Ways.” Produced in collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Jason Goldberg and released under Universal Music Group, the album showcased 25 tracks spanning various genres, including ARNB, Dance, and his signature Pluggnb sound. Notable contributors included rapper Desire and producers Goyxrd, BenjiCold, Autumn!, and Chicago’s Chief Keef. “Stuck In My Ways” achieved notable chart success, peaking at No. 24 on the US Apple Music Albums Chart and No. 11 on the Hip-Hop/Rap Charts.
Chris Richards of The Washington Post aptly describes Summrs’ musical style as “sticky, Auto-Tuned rhymes sounding as if they were melting the midday sun.” As a trailblazer in the pluggnb subgenre, Summrs’ recent works also reflect elements of rage trap and the distinct sounds of Chief Keef and his Glo Gang label, as well as the essence of southern hip-hop. With his ever-evolving musical prowess, Summrs continues to leave an indelible mark on the rap and hip-hop landscape.
