Suicideboys, stylized as $uicideboy$, emerged as a prominent American hip-hop duo hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana. Cousins Ruby da Cherry and Scrim, stylized as $crim, established the group in 2014.
Leveraging the SoundCloud music platform, the duo swiftly gained fame due to their distinctive self-produced beats, raw and intense lyrics, and thematic exploration of substance abuse and thoughts of self-harm.
Their independent record label, G*59 Records, oversees the distribution of all their music in collaboration with Virgin Music Label & Artist Services.
Renowned within the underground rap scene, Suicideboys also boast a dedicated cult following. Their initial focus on EPs and mixtapes culminated in their debut studio album, “I Want to Die in New Orleans,” launched on September 7, 2018. This release enjoyed commercial success, marking their first entry into the top ten of the US Billboard 200 chart.
A notable milestone arrived in May 2019 with the drop of a collaborative six-track EP alongside Blink-182’s drummer Travis Barker, titled “Live Fast, Die Whenever.” This project further featured contributions from Korn guitarist James Shaffer.
Scrim, born Scott Anthony Arceneaux Jr. on April 11, 1989, in Marrero, Louisiana, was originally inspired by T-Pain and Kanye West. His music production journey commenced with the purchase of his first laptop, financed by proceeds from illicit activities.
His early passion for DJing expanded during his tenure at Delgado Community College, where he was engaged as a DJ for parties. His employment history also included selling used furniture; however, his job was terminated after acquiring visible hand tattoos three years into the role.
Ruby da Cherry, whose birth name is Aristos Norman Petrou, was born on April 22, 1990. Raised in Metairie, Louisiana, he developed a fascination with music at a young age, starting with the violin at seven and transitioning to drums at ten.
This journey led to his involvement in bands during middle school. He also worked as a waiter at his father’s restaurant until 2015. Petrou’s trajectory within the punk rock scene included drumming for the band Vapo-Rats. Disenchanted with his bandmates’ lack of dedication to the group’s future, he left to explore a hip-hop career with Arceneaux.
As maternal cousins, Arceneaux and Petrou shared a close bond during their upbringing. Recognizing their shared passion for pursuing music as a serious endeavor and dissatisfaction with their current paths, they founded Suicideboys.
This endeavor was underscored by a profound commitment: should their musical ambitions falter, they made a pact to both end their lives. In an interview with Mass Appeal, Arceneaux elaborated that this commitment symbolized their resolute dedication, akin to cutting one’s hand and sealing a pact with no fallback plan, a pact binding their aspirations to a timeline that, if unmet, would bring about a drastic end.
