Scottish actress Ashley Jensen is back as DI Ruth Calder in the ninth season of Shetland, bringing her character’s signature scarves and winter gear to tackle the latest mysteries on the cold, remote island.
Known for her practical, no-nonsense style, Calder returns to Shetland for a double missing persons case, but filming proved as challenging as the storyline.
Jensen shared that the harsh weather was one of the toughest parts of filming this season.
“We had heat pads everywhere—in our pockets, underwear, even taped to our backs,” she explained, adding that between takes, they had to thaw their hands in hot water just to keep going.
In this new season, Calder finds herself drawn back to Shetland, feeling an “unfinished business” with the place.
Jensen noted that while her character initially intended a quick return to London, Shetland has started to feel like home.
Jensen herself was thrilled to return, sharing the same “magnetic draw” to the rugged beauty of the islands.
