Music icon Beyoncé recently delved into her personal journey and the inspiration behind her upcoming haircare line, Cécrid, in an exclusive interview with Essence.
The interview sheds light on Beyoncé’s deep connection to haircare, rooted in her childhood experiences watching her mother, Ms. Tina Knowles, work as a hairstylist from their home salon.
Recalling fond memories of her mother’s salon, Beyoncé reminisced about the transformative power of hairstyling and the sense of empowerment it brought to women.
These memories served as the foundation for Cécrid, named after her mother’s former salon, Headliners.
“I have vivid memories of my mother working as a hairstylist right from our home. She built a small salon at the back of our house, and I can recall catching glimpses of her while I watched cartoons or played with my dolls and toys. These moments are etched into every corner of my childhood memories,” said Beyoncé.
“I saw her shampooing and trimming hair, transforming women, leaving them feeling really good. Looking back, it was more than just a hair appointment—it was therapy. I worked in her salon, sweeping the floors and helping out where I could. I used to eavesdrop and listen in on their conversations intently. It was a sacred space for these women. She was so good and so talented that eventually, her clientele outgrew her at-home salon. So that’s when she opened her first hair salon, Headliners.”
Beyoncé revealed that her own drastic hairstyle change in 2013, when she famously chopped off her signature locs into a pixie cut, was a significant emotional transformation for her. She described it as a rebellion against societal expectations and a symbol of liberation, especially as she navigated new motherhood.

The decision to cut her hair, though shocking to many, marked a pivotal moment of bravery for Beyoncé. It signified her willingness to defy conventions and embrace her own identity, paving the way for bolder decisions in both her personal and professional life.
Cécrid, set to launch on February 20th, will feature an eight-piece collection including shampoos, scalp scrubs, deep conditioners, masks, lotions, oils, and other treatments. The line embodies Beyoncé’s vision of celebrating diverse hair textures and promoting self-care and confidence.
In addition to her venture into the beauty industry, Beyoncé is gearing up for the release of her highly anticipated country-inspired album, tentatively titled Act II, scheduled for release on March 29th.
