David Raven, the legendary performer known by his drag persona Maisie Trollette, has passed away at the age of 91.
A beloved figure in the UK’s drag and cabaret scene, Maisie was a key icon of Brighton Pride, having been part of the event since its inception in 1973.
Born in 1933, Raven’s career flourished as one half of The Trollettes double act, alongside fellow performer Jimmy Court.
His decades-long contribution to entertainment spanned cabaret, pantomime, and charity work, earning him the title of Britain’s oldest drag queen.
West End performer and close friend Mark Inscoe paid tribute, calling him “an absolute legend in the entertainment industry.”
He highlighted Raven’s warmth, wit, and philanthropic efforts, which included traveling to Thailand to raise funds for an orphanage.
Fellow drag artist La Voix, known for competing on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, shared fond memories of working with Maisie in London, Brighton, and at various Pride events.
“Her acid tongue always put me in my place, and I loved her for it,” La Voix recalled, adding that Maisie once told her, ‘Never be afraid of youth, La Voix’.
The Sussex Beacon, a Brighton-based charity supporting people living with HIV, also honored Maisie’s legacy, saying she brought “immense joy to countless numbers of people within the LGBT community.”
A spokesperson praised Raven’s compassion, generosity, and sharp wit, adding, “Rest in peace, David. Thank you so much, for everything.”
Maisie Trollette’s impact on drag, cabaret, and LGBTQ+ culture will not be forgotten.
