The town of Cinderford, located in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, has decided to honor its hometown heroes, EMF, with a commemorative blue plaque.
Known for their 1990 hit single “Unbelievable,” which ranked as the UK’s 30th best-selling single that year, EMF made waves in the music scene and has left an indelible mark on their community.
This recognition follows a campaign by local crier Jer Holland, who advocated for the band’s lasting contribution to the town’s cultural identity.
James Atkin, EMF’s lead singer, shared his excitement with BBC Radio Gloucestershire, saying he was “completely blown away” by the tribute.
Both Atkin and the band’s guitarist, Ian Dench, frequently celebrate their Gloucestershire roots at gigs.
Reflecting on their beginnings, Atkin recalled that their first rehearsal took place in a Cinderford church hall—a venue that now holds a special place in the band’s history.
“It’s come completely out of the blue,” Atkin said, “We’re just amazed. What a great thing. We love the Forest, we love Cinderford. It’s where we started, that’s our root.
To get recognized is kind of mind-blowing.”
Holland expressed his pride, stating, “It’s about time we recognize what they did for the town and what they continue to do to put the town on the map.
Like many Foresters, I’ve always been very proud of their achievements and their music.”
Dench echoed these sentiments, adding, “We feel very proud of having made Cinderford and the Forest of Dean proud of us.”
The plaque serves not only as a tribute to the band’s success but also as a reminder of Cinderford’s enduring pride in EMF’s accomplishments.
