Bill Dare, the acclaimed comedy writer and producer behind shows like Spitting Image and Dead Ringers, has died at the age of 64.
His agent confirmed that Dare passed away over the weekend following an accident overseas, though further details were not disclosed.
Dare had a decades-long career creating award-winning satirical programs for both television and radio.
His work included The Late Edition and I’ve Never Seen Star Wars, as well as Dead Ringers, which is set to mark its 25th anniversary on BBC Radio 4 this year.
He also produced The Now Show, a long-running satirical take on current events that aired on Radio 4 from 1998 to 2024.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and friends. Dead Ringers star Jon Culshaw described him as “the wisest comedy alchemist and the dearest, dearest friend.”
Actress Tracy-Ann Oberman shared her heartbreak on Instagram, crediting Dare for launching her comedy career.
Julia McKenzie, comedy commissioner for Radio 4, praised his ability to keep satire “spiky,” while BBC Studios Audio’s creative director Richard Morris called him a “legendary figure” in the comedy world.
Dare’s representatives at JFL Agency expressed their shock and sadness, offering condolences to his wife Lucy, daughter Rebecca, and his grieving family and friends.
Remembered for his sharp wit, dry humor, and keen instinct for satire, Dare leaves behind a lasting legacy in British comedy.
