A campaign has been launched to bring back one of south Bristol’s most cherished community events, the Bedminster Winter Lantern Parade.
The event was cancelled this year due to financial challenges, but organizers are now working to raise £10,000 to cover its running costs, aiming for the parade’s return in early 2025.
Ade Williams, chair of the organising committee, emphasized the importance of the fundraising effort: “There is a lot that goes into this, that makes it as spectacular as it is, and all of that depends on our crowdfunder.”
Jackie Smith, a parade volunteer, highlighted the event’s impact on the community: “It is such an amazing community feel, it’s so creative, it brings light and joy to the streets of BS3. All ages love creating these lanterns.”
The parade showcases a wide array of impressive lanterns crafted by local schools and community groups.
In previous years, these lanterns have included creative designs like a Viking ship, a rhino, dragonflies, and polar bears, capturing the imaginations of both participants and spectators.
Mr. Williams also spoke of the event’s unifying role in the community: “We celebrate the fact that, especially within our community, there’s a strong sense that wherever you are, as long as you have the Bemmy spirit in you, you are part of the community. For every child to walk down the streets holding their lantern, they will feel like they belong.”
