Musician Dave Mason has announced the cancellation of his upcoming US tour dates as he undergoes immediate treatment for a “serious heart condition.” The Worcester-born guitarist and songwriter, co-founder of the iconic British rock band Traffic, was scheduled to perform in Santa Barbara on Tuesday.
In a statement released on his official website, tour organizers shared the news: “We are sorry to inform you that Dave Mason has a serious heart condition detected in a routine appointment that requires immediate attention.” They expressed optimism for his recovery, stating that they expect a successful outcome from his heart surgery, with plans for him to return to touring in 2025.
Mason, 78, expressed his disappointment over the cancellation, saying, “I’m heartbroken to have to cancel these dates, but it’s doctor’s orders. I’ll be back, and better than ever, in 2025.” The cancelled performances were primarily in California, with one additional date scheduled in Nevada.
Mason co-founded Traffic in 1967 alongside Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood, contributing to the band’s first two albums, Mr Fantasy and Traffic. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Notably, Mason wrote the band’s hit song Feelin’ Alright?, which has been re-recorded by artists including Joe Cocker, Three Dog Night, and the Jackson 5.
