When Rachel and Martin Ashby launched their lighting business in Melbourne, Derbyshire, they never imagined their handmade creations would appear in a Hollywood blockbuster.
Yet this dream came true when Universal Studios ordered their custom lights for Wicked, the Wizard of Oz spin-off that premiered in UK cinemas on 22 November.
The Ashbys’ company, Ashby Lighting, was commissioned in October 2022 to craft 50 “witches hat” lights and a bespoke chandelier for the Emerald City set.
Seeing their work on the big screen was a thrilling moment for the couple, especially as passionate film lovers.
Although supplying film productions isn’t entirely new to them—having worked with Warner Brothers in the past—being chosen for Wicked felt particularly special.
Mrs. Ashby expressed pride in seeing their Melbourne-made creations featured prominently in such a major film.
The project was a significant milestone, providing valuable business during challenging economic times.
The Ashbys also emphasized their commitment to supporting the local economy by collaborating with nearby businesses.
Looking ahead, they hope their lights will be used again in Wicked: Part Two, set for release in 2025.
Reflecting on the journey, Mrs. Ashby fondly recalled her childhood love for the original Wizard of Oz, never imagining her family business would one day play a part in its iconic universe.
She called the experience a testament to their dedication and the long hours they’ve invested over the years.
