Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke is maintaining his signature upbeat spirit despite growing concern from fans about his health. After canceling recent public appearances, the 98-year-old was spotted in Malibu on Sept. 23, where he humorously addressed how he’s feeling.
“I feel old,” Van Dyke joked with a smile, in a video captured by the New York Post, adding, “I’m praying that I make it” to his 99th birthday in December.
Fans began to worry when Van Dyke withdrew from an upcoming fan event in Salt Lake City, Utah, scheduled for Sept. 26-28. A statement on the event’s website explained, “At almost 99 years of age, traveling and interacting with thousands of people is more than he is able to do at this time,” though he expressed gratitude to his supporters.
Concerns had already surfaced when the Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star skipped the 2024 Emmys on Sept. 15, where he had been announced as a presenter. However, just days before, Van Dyke made a special public appearance at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sept. 7, where his documentary Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic won for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded).
Reflecting on his storied career, Van Dyke said, “I hope I’m remembered for making people laugh for 75 years.” Playfully, he added, “I’m looking for work if anybody has!”
As he approaches his 99th birthday, Van Dyke continues to inspire fans with his humor, resilience, and legacy of joy.
