The Eurovision Song Contest will see some divided loyalties this year after a song penned by Dorset-based songwriter Emma Gale was selected to represent Croatia.
Croatian pop star Marko Bosnjak emerged victorious at Dora 2025, Croatia’s national selection competition, with Poison Cake, a track written by Gale.
Gale, who hails from Weymouth, was present in Opatija for Sunday’s final, where the winner was determined through a combination of jury and public votes.
Reflecting on the whirlwind year, she described 2025 as “crazy” after having three of her songs in contention for Eurovision across three different countries.
Her journey into Eurovision songwriting began two years ago after she connected with a publisher who had an interest in the contest.
The experience has been surreal for Gale, who admitted that having just one song in the competition would have been incredible, but seeing three make it so far was nearly unheard of.
One of her other compositions, Sulale, performed by Nora Jabri, placed sixth in Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix.
A third song was a strong contender in Latvia’s national selection but was unfortunately withdrawn when the singer fell ill and was unable to perform.
Gale first gained widespread attention during the Covid lockdown when her song Let’s See What the Earth Has to Say went viral on Facebook.
The overwhelming response to the track marked a turning point in her career.
“People went crazy for it,” she recalled. “A lot of people did creative things during that time. For me, it’s been amazing – it’s changed my life.”
Eurovision 2025 is set to take place in Basel, Switzerland, from May 13 to 17.
With Poison Cake representing Croatia, Gale will have a strong personal stake in this year’s competition, further cementing her growing influence in the Eurovision songwriting scene.
