The Museum of East Dorset has launched an online database filled with “precious photographs” and diary excerpts of Dorset servicemen who lost their lives in World War One.
This digital collection captures the personal stories of those memorialized on commemorative plaques, statues, and monuments throughout the region, including private, public, and religious sites.
The project, titled The One Hundred Year Heritage of the First World War for Wimborne and East Dorset, offers free access on the museum’s website.
It gathers letters, postcards, medals, and other memorabilia to preserve these stories for future generations.
Museum director Francessca Hollow emphasized the goal of making these details available to ensure the names of fallen servicemen are not forgotten.
After delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the project is now accessible and is also contributing to the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War project, further expanding the reach and remembrance of Dorset’s WWI heroes.
