Unlike fashion trends like florals for spring, Emily Blunt’s daughters don’t think her iconic role in The Devil Wears Prada was anything to celebrate. In fact, Hazel, 10, and Violet, 7—whom Blunt shares with husband John Krasinski—believe she played the character of Miranda Priestly’s assistant, Emily Charlton, a little too well.
“They thought I was the meanest person they’ve ever met,” Blunt revealed in a recent interview with Page Six on Sept. 23. While her character’s cold demeanor was hard to miss, the Oppenheimer actress has nothing but fond memories of her time on set.
“We just had the time of our lives on it,” Blunt said, adding how amazed she is that the film has remained a fan-favorite. “It’s incredible that it has such an indelible fingerprint on people and that it’s people’s standby, feel-good movie. It’s quoted to me every week.”
For Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada also holds personal significance. “At the time I was young, it was my first big movie,” she recalled. “I remember my agent calling me and telling me about the opening weekend. I was like, ‘Is that good?’ I didn’t know what was good.”
The actress, now 41, reflected on her journey to Hollywood, especially in light of overcoming a stutter as a child. “I never thought I would be in a job where I’d have to communicate so much,” she admitted. “I do think it’s really ironic that I’ve ended up being in a job that is so public and full of so much public speaking.”
Blunt also offered some encouraging words for children dealing with stuttering: “If you speak openly about it, if you don’t keep it in the shadows, if you inform people, they’re gonna learn.”
