The body of pop star Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, has been released to his family in Argentina to be flown back to the UK, public prosecutor Andrés Madrea confirmed.
Payne, 31, died three weeks ago after a tragic fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.
An autopsy revealed that the singer sustained multiple traumatic injuries and severe internal and external bleeding as a result of the fall.
Authorities had held Payne’s body in Argentina to conduct additional toxicology and laboratory tests, which are part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Preliminary reports from October suggested potential traces of cocaine exposure, though officials stressed these results do not provide a clear indication of the amount present in his system at the time.
Known for his work as both a co-writer and vocalist on many One Direction hits, Payne continued to thrive as a solo artist with songs like Strip That Down and Bedroom Floor.
Despite his musical success, Payne had been facing personal and legal difficulties leading up to his death.
His ex-fiancée, Maya Henry, had recently issued a cease and desist order, alleging “obsessive” behavior.
Additionally, Payne’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, shared that the couple had been planning a future together.
In a heartfelt statement, Payne’s family expressed their grief, saying, “Liam will forever live in our hearts, and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny, and brave soul.”
The family’s focus now is on honoring his memory as they await the completion of the Argentinian investigation, which continues to explore all aspects of the singer’s passing.
