The Cheese and Grain, a renowned small music venue in Frome, Somerset, has unveiled ambitious plans for a £1.7 million expansion aimed at nurturing emerging talent.
Known for hosting major acts like Sir Paul McCartney and Coldplay, the venue hopes to build a new centre featuring affordable rehearsal spaces and additional editing suites to support the next generation of artists.
Peter Wheelhouse, Frome Town Council’s deputy clerk, highlighted the community benefits of the project, including expanded vocational training opportunities, apprenticeships, and stronger connections between the venue and educational institutions.
He confirmed that Somerset Council has expressed support for the initiative, with efforts underway to secure central government funding through the levelling-up scheme.
The proposed expansion is part of a £5 million cultural investment bid submitted to the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government in late 2024, with a decision expected this spring.
Plans also include practical improvements such as a lift capable of accommodating large instruments, increased storage facilities, and a third wheelchair-accessible toilet.
An application for a sub-lease extension and minor boundary adjustments has been submitted to the town council, with discussions set for Wednesday at a full council meeting.
If approved, the project is poised to strengthen the Cheese and Grain’s role as a cultural and creative hub in Somerset.
