The New York building at 66 Perry Street, made famous as the exterior of Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment in HBO’s Sex and the City, may soon see tighter security measures if its owner gains approval for a proposed cast iron gate.
The property, located in the historic Greenwich Village neighborhood, has long attracted throngs of fans who visit to relive moments from the iconic show.
According to the owner, the current chain-link barrier and “No Trespassing-Private Property” sign have proven insufficient to curb fan enthusiasm.
In her application to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, she described the ongoing disturbances caused by visitors.
“At any hour of the day or night, there are groups of visitors in front of the house taking flash photos, engaging in loud chatter, posting on social media, making TikTok videos, or just celebrating the moment,” the owner wrote.
While some fans respect the chain, others disregard it entirely, climbing over to pose for photos, dance, or even lie on the steps.
Some have reportedly tried to open the front door, peered into windows, or rung doorbells late at night while intoxicated. Incidents of graffiti and carved initials on the property have also been reported.
After more than 20 years of enduring disruptions, the owner expressed a desire to restore peace for the building’s tenants and herself.
“In order to regain a reasonable quality of life, we need to install a proper gate,” she explained in the application.
Because of the building’s location in a historic district, the owner requires permission to replace the current barrier with the proposed cast iron gate.
The application, first reported in the Substack newsletter FeedMe, underscores the owner’s hope to balance preservation with protection.
Sex and the City, which aired from 1998 to 2004 and won seven Emmys, has continued to garner a devoted following thanks to its availability on streaming platforms like Netflix.
The show, which chronicled the dating lives of four New York women, has inspired two feature films and a sequel series, And Just Like That.
However, the enduring fandom has made the iconic apartment a constant destination, much to the frustration of its current owner.
