Hollywood star Jamie Foxx has revealed the cause of his hospital admission in April last year.
Speaking during his Netflix special Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…, recorded in Atlanta, the Django Unchained star disclosed that he suffered a “brain bleed that led to a stroke.”
Foxx recounted experiencing a severe headache one day and asking for an aspirin. Before he could take it, he blacked out and lost consciousness for 20 days.
Initially, his daughter Corinne Foxx referred to the incident as a “medical complication,” but the family chose to keep further details private at the time.
During the emotional conversation, Foxx shared that after being given a cortisone injection, medics sent him home.
However, his sister Deidra Dixon sensed something was wrong and drove him to Piedmont Hospital.
There, doctors discovered the brain bleed.
One doctor urgently informed his family, “If I don’t go in his head right now, we’re going to lose him.”
His sister prayed continuously during the life-saving operation.
Foxx reflected on the surreal experience, saying, “Your life doesn’t flash before your face. It was oddly peaceful.
I saw a tunnel; I didn’t see the light.” He even joked, “It was hot in that tunnel — am I going to the wrong place?”
Doctors warned his family that while a full recovery was possible, it would be the toughest year of his life.
Foxx praised his sister and daughter for protecting his privacy, explaining they didn’t want the public to see him in such a vulnerable state.
He admitted his daughter feared people might create memes if his condition became public.
He recalled waking up on May 4, 2023, in a wheelchair, unable to walk, with no memory of what had happened. Initially in denial, he thought, “Jamie Foxx don’t get strokes.”
He later underwent rehabilitation in Chicago.
Foxx had been filming Netflix’s Back In Action alongside Cameron Diaz when the medical emergency occurred.
While he has previously expressed gratitude for the support he received, this was the first time he shared the full extent of his health ordeal.
