Reality TV star Jax Taylor is back in court with new divorce papers against his estranged wife, Brittany Cartwright—this time with the help of an attorney.
The former Vanderpump Rules star enlisted attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan to file an amended dissolution of marriage request in a Los Angeles court on October 3.
This new legal move comes after Taylor’s initial divorce filing, submitted last month, raised eyebrows when he checked a box that claimed he and Cartwright were never legally married.
The reality star’s rep quickly clarified to E! News, explaining that Taylor had “made errors in filling out forms that are usually done by trained legal professionals” and promised the paperwork would be corrected.
True to their word, the new petition no longer states that the couple was never married—correcting the shocking mistake that had Cartwright responding publicly.
The Valley star took to social media, commenting under E! News’ October 2 Instagram post about the situation: “We are legally married. I’m guessing paperwork is hard for some people.”
Even Lance Bass, who officiated the couple’s 2019 wedding, weighed in to back up Cartwright’s statement, writing, “I can confirm this. Pastor Lance signed the papers.”
Taylor’s revised filing also includes changes to their custody arrangement for their 3-year-old son, Cruz.
In his initial filing, he indicated that Cartwright should receive legal and physical custody of Cruz.
However, the updated document now requests joint legal custody, with visitation rights for Taylor.
A note within the filing adds that “final decision-making authority” will go to Cartwright after consulting with Taylor.
Cartwright originally filed for divorce in August 2024, six months after announcing their split following five years of marriage.
She listed their official separation date as January 24, while Taylor initially cited September 26, the same day he submitted his first set of papers.
However, Taylor has since amended his petition to match Cartwright’s separation date.
Further corrections in the new filing include Taylor retracting his request for the court to “reserve for future determination” the issue of spousal support.
In the amended petition, he asked that spousal support be waived for both parties.
Taylor is also seeking to have all property acquired before their marriage, and after their separation, classified as separate property.
The exact nature of their assets, as well as community and quasi-community property, remains undetermined.
Cartwright has occasionally addressed their breakup, particularly regarding its impact on their son, Cruz.
In a recent interview with E! News at the 2024 Daytime Beauty Awards, she emphasized that co-parenting is their priority.
“Obviously, we’re both going to put him first,” she said. “Even if Jax and I are fighting, it’s never going to come between Cruz.”
