Joanna “JoJo” Levesque opened up about her body image struggles while filming the 2006 movie Aquamarine alongside Emma Roberts and Sara Paxton. During a September 19 appearance on The Viall Files podcast, she revealed, “I was not as skinny as the other girls,” expressing feelings of insecurity in comparison to her co-stars.
JoJo, 33, believes that this tendency to compare oneself to others is ingrained in women from a young age. “From a young age, I think we’re all kind of aware, or we’re measuring ourselves up next to other girls,” she shared. Despite her insecurities, she fondly recalled her time on set in Australia, where she played the tomboy character Hailey Rogers. The film has since gained a cult following, which JoJo found amusing. “I hope that word isn’t offensive… It’s just such a silly movie,” she said, appreciating that it remains a favorite for mothers sharing it with their daughters.
In her new memoir, Over the Influence, JoJo also reflects on her struggles as a child star, including battles with alcohol and prescription drug addiction. She revealed that addiction runs in her family, as both her parents faced similar issues. “For a while, I was super self-righteous and thought I’d never be like my parents,” she admitted in a September 17 interview with People.
Ultimately, JoJo recognized the importance of addressing her own struggles. While she mentioned that she is not currently sober, she has attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, acknowledging her connection to her parents’ experiences. “I need to be awake to what’s happening within myself,” she concluded, emphasizing her journey toward self-awareness and healing.
