In a world where Hollywood breakups often lead to drama and distance, Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston prove that friendship can still thrive even after the romance fades.
Just one week after announcing his engagement to actress Nicole Brydon Bloom, The Leftovers star shared some heartfelt thoughts about his ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, revealing that the two remain close friends seven years after their 2017 split.
In a candid interview with The Times published on September 3, Justin, 53, expressed his ongoing affection for the Friends alum, especially after she called out Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance in July over his negative remarks about “childless cat ladies.” “She is still very dear to me, so of course, yeah, I feel protective,” Justin said. “But she batted back criticism, as well she should.”
While his bond with Jennifer has stayed strong, Justin is now looking forward to a new chapter with his fiancée, Nicole. After more than a year of dating, Justin finally popped the question last month—a moment that wasn’t without its nerves. “Of course I was nervous proposing,” he admitted. “It is a question after all, so the answer isn’t guaranteed. But it was wonderful.”
This isn’t the first time Justin has opened up about his relationship with Jennifer post-breakup. The Beetlejuice star previously explained that their friendship has endured because they didn’t have a “dramatic split.” In a 2021 interview with Esquire, Justin shared, “I’m sincere when I say that I cherish our friendship. We can not be together and still bring each other joy and friendship.”
Jennifer, who has been known to make Justin laugh “very, very hard,” also appreciates the positive aspects of their amicable breakup. During a 2021 interview on SiriusXM’s Lunch with Bruce podcast, the Golden Globe winner reflected on the freedom she found after their split, saying, “I loved really being my own woman. Without being a part of a couple. I’ve been a part of a couple since I was 20, so there was something really nice about taking the time.”
