In a candid interview with the BBC, actress Kate Winslet shared her thoughts on body image, calling for women to embrace their natural shapes. Winslet revealed that while filming her latest project Lee, she was advised to sit up straighter to conceal her “belly rolls.” Rather than conforming, she leaned into her role as Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller, a World War II photographer known for her unapologetic lifestyle.
“She wasn’t hitting the gym or doing Pilates. She was living her life—eating cheese, bread, drinking wine, and not obsessing over it. Naturally, her body would reflect that softness,” Winslet explained.
The Titanic star passionately believes that women should celebrate “being a real shape, being soft, and maybe having a few extra rolls.” Winslet highlighted the societal pressure women face to look perfect, urging a change in mindset. “We’re so conditioned to see those natural imperfections and instantly criticize them. It’s time we break away from those labels.”
At 48, Winslet has long been an outspoken advocate against body shaming. Reflecting on her experience on the set of Lee, she recalled the moment a crew member suggested she adjust her posture. “There’s a scene where Lee’s sitting in a bikini, and someone came up between takes and said, ‘You might want to sit up straighter.’ What? So you can’t see my belly rolls? Absolutely not—it was intentional!”
When asked if she was bothered by looking “less-than-perfect” on screen, Winslet replied, “Quite the opposite. I take pride in it because it’s my life on my face, and I want that to be seen.” For Winslet, each passing year brings more self-acceptance, allowing her to let go of external opinions.
“Life is too short,” she added. “I don’t want to look back and think, ‘Why did I worry about that?’ So, guess what—I don’t worry anymore.”
With her fearless approach to aging and body image, Winslet continues to be a champion for women, proving that confidence comes from embracing who you truly are, belly rolls and all.
