Pop superstar Katy Perry is set to make history as part of the first all-women spaceflight on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket.
The Firework singer will join Jeff Bezos’s fiancée Lauren Sanchez, CBS presenter Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn on the mission.
According to Blue Origin, this will be the first all-female spaceflight since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963.
While an official launch date has not been announced, the flight is expected to take place this spring—before Perry embarks on her Lifetimes Tour, which runs from April 23 to November 11.
“If you had told me I’d be part of the first all-female crew in space, I would have believed you. Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child,” Perry said in a statement cited by Newsweek.
The mission, designated NS-31, will mark the 11th human spaceflight for New Shepard and its 31st launch overall.
Blue Origin’s suborbital trips last approximately 11 minutes, taking passengers past the Kármán line—the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The fully autonomous spacecraft does not require pilots, offering a unique experience for its passengers.
Lauren Sanchez played a key role in assembling the historic crew, with Blue Origin crediting her leadership in bringing the mission to life.
“I am honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come,” Sanchez stated.
Sanchez first revealed plans for an all-female space mission in a 2023 Vogue interview, emphasizing their goal of “paving the way for women” in space exploration.
This marks the latest high-profile spaceflight featuring celebrities.
Jeff Bezos flew on Blue Origin’s first manned mission in 2021, followed by Good Morning America co-host Michael Strahan and Star Trek actor William Shatner.
Meanwhile, Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson made his own space journey aboard VSS Unity in July 2021.
However, SpaceX founder Elon Musk has yet to take the plunge into space himself.
With this mission, Perry and her crewmates are set to become part of spaceflight history, proving that the sky is no longer the limit.
