US rapper Kendrick Lamar stole the spotlight at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards, winning eight awards, including the prestigious Song of the Year and Artist of the Year.
The Not Like Us hitmaker was nominated for a total of eleven awards, solidifying his reign as one of the most celebrated artists in the industry.
Hosted by Fat Joe for the third consecutive year, the ceremony took place in Las Vegas last week but was broadcast on Tuesday night.
Other standout winners included Nicki Minaj, who took home Hip Hop Album of the Year, Sexyy Red as Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist, and Missy Elliott, recognized as Best Live Performer.
The BET Hip Hop Awards, a spin-off of the main BET Awards, focus on honoring black excellence in entertainment.
Travis Scott, known for hits like Highest in the Room, was honored with the I Am Hip Hop Award, recognizing his contributions to music as both a producer and an artist for over a decade.
While accepting his award, Scott shared an inspiring message: “I’m just so glad that we made it this far. I want to let everybody know where you come from doesn’t really matter, what goes on in your brain can take you to the next level and beyond.”
50 Cent also made waves, picking up the Hustler of the Year award after recently announcing his first residency in Las Vegas.
The night featured live performances from Trina, Yung Miami, Juicy J, and 2 Chainz, adding to the event’s celebratory atmosphere.
Despite the high-profile wins and performances, the awards show drew some criticism on social media.
Some fans voiced their disappointment with the event’s presentation, with one X (formerly Twitter) user commenting, “The stage looks a mess,” and another adding, “The BET Hip Hop Awards are being held in a small nightclub.”
