Kevin Spacey has fired back at Guy Pearce’s recent claims that the Oscar-winning actor “targeted” him during the filming of L.A. Confidential in 1997.
In a video posted on X, Spacey dismissed the allegations, telling Pearce to “grow up” and insisting, “You are not a victim.”
Pearce, who stars in the recently acclaimed film The Brutalist, reignited the controversy this week, expanding on comments he made in 2018 when he described Spacey as “a handsy guy.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pearce stated that Spacey “targeted me, no question,” during the five-month shoot, adding that he often brushed it off at the time.
He described Spacey as “aggressive” yet “extremely charming and brilliant” and admitted he felt safer on set when fellow actor Simon Baker was around, as Spacey allegedly shifted his attention elsewhere.
Pearce also revealed that he had an emotional breakdown when he saw the #MeToo allegations against Spacey making headlines, realizing how he had suppressed his own experience.
He claimed he had confronted Spacey about his behavior in the past, leading to “ugly” confrontations.
Responding to these allegations, Spacey called out Pearce for speaking to the media rather than addressing him privately.
“If I did something then that upset you, you could have reached out to me,” he said.
He also pointed out that Pearce had visited him in Georgia a year after L.A. Confidential while he was filming Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, questioning why Pearce would have traveled to see him if he had felt uncomfortable.
“Does that not fit into the victim narrative you have going?” Spacey asked.
Spacey, whose career has been derailed by multiple allegations, has long maintained his innocence. In 2023, he was acquitted of all sexual assault charges in a London trial, and in 2022, a U.S. court dismissed a separate lawsuit against him.
However, he still faces a civil trial over an alleged 2008 sexual assault and another lawsuit recently filed in the UK’s High Court.
Despite the ongoing legal battles, Spacey stood firm in his response to Pearce, stating, “I’ve got nothing to hide,” and inviting Pearce to have a private conversation with him.
However, he concluded with a final rebuke: “Guy, you need to grow up. You are not a victim.”
