Kody Brown has shared his unique perspective on the conclusion of his spiritual marriage to Meri Brown. In the October 13 episode of Sister Wives, Meri reached out to their church, seeking a formal release from her marriage to Kody.
The couple, who tied the knot legally in 1990, had already divorced in 2014 to allow Kody to marry his fourth wife, Robyn Brown, and adopt her three children from a previous relationship.
Despite the years of estrangement, Meri maintained that she still viewed herself as Kody’s wife.
“I received a call from the church leader who informed me that they had granted Meri a release,” Kody shared during the episode. “They mentioned a few things that I’d rather not disclose, but they did upset me.”
Meri later revealed the specifics of what had troubled Kody.
“They stated it was on the grounds of abandonment,” she explained. “I know he dislikes that term because he doesn’t believe he abandoned me, but I feel differently.”
Kody addressed his decision to remain in the marriage despite their long separation, attributing it to Robyn’s wish for him and Meri to stay together.
“Robyn felt that if I waited on God, things could change for Meri and me,” Kody said. “I took that advice and waited. Over time, I realized it was unlikely to work out, and I regret not figuring it out sooner.”
He also admitted that fear played a role in his reluctance to end the marriage.
“I’m relieved it’s over. It’s sad and heartbreaking, but I’m relieved,” Kody said about his first marriage. “I had moved on long ago. But let’s be honest—I was afraid of Meri’s reaction if I removed that Band-Aid. She has never been loyal to me, and I’ve been concerned about my reputation. Divorce can ruin your reputation.”
In 2015, Meri was involved in a catfishing scandal when she was deceived into communicating online with someone she thought was a man.
The fallout from this incident led to the couple choosing to live apart, even though they remained married for nearly another decade.
“It’s really sad to hear Kody discuss our marriage in this way,” Meri confided in her confessional. “It seems like his narrative has shifted, and the things he says about me to others are simply not true.”
