Welsh rapper and producer Lemfreck, real name Lemarl Freckleton, made history on Tuesday night by winning the prestigious 2024 Welsh Music Prize for his powerful album Blood, Sweat and Fears.
The Newport native claimed the top spot, fending off fierce competition from heavyweights like rock band Skindred and iconic singer Gruff Rhys.
Along with the title, Lemfreck bagged the £10,000 award at the star-studded ceremony held at Cardiff’s Wales Millennium Centre.
Beaming with pride as he accepted the 14th annual award from host Sian Eleri, the 30-year-old artist gave a heartfelt shoutout to his family.
“As a young black kid growing up, they constantly told me I could do anything and be anything,” Lemfreck shared, honoring his parents in his emotional speech.
The rising star also paid tribute to his hometown and to Benji Webbe of Skindred, saying, “This one goes to my community in Newport. If I didn’t see Benji doing it first, I’m telling you now, I would not be able to do this, so I’d like to thank him.”
Lemfreck used the moment to highlight the importance of representation, adding, “It’s not a box tick when artists like myself win awards like this—it’s a confirmation of art.”
The night wasn’t just about celebrating new talent, as Welsh hip-hop legends Eric Martin (MC Eric) and DJ Jaffa (Jason Farrell) were also honored with the Welsh Music Inspiration Award for their groundbreaking contributions to music.
The duo has been instrumental in shaping the Welsh hip-hop scene, with Martin gaining fame in the late ’80s as a co-writer on Technotronic’s global hit album Pump Up The Jam and DJ Jaffa spinning records since 1985.
“I feel blessed to have been part of a young, vibrant, hip-hop scene in Wales,” said Martin, reflecting on their enduring legacy.
DJ Jaffa echoed his sentiment, saying, “I love music, I love DJing, I love to see black music in Wales. This is our year.”
