Fans of Malcolm in the Middle are in for a nostalgic treat as the beloved sitcom gears up for a four-episode special on Disney+.
However, one major character will be absent—Dewey, originally played by Erik Per Sullivan, will not be returning, as the former child actor has left the industry.
Instead, the role will be taken over by Fargo actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, according to Variety.
Frankie Muniz is set to reprise his role as Malcolm, alongside Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston as his chaotic but loving parents, Lois and Hal.
Christopher Masterson (Francis) and Justin Berfield (Reese) are also confirmed to return, while new cast members Kiana Madeira and Keeley Karsten will portray Malcolm’s girlfriend and teenage daughter, respectively.
Sullivan, now 33, stepped away from acting after Malcolm in the Middle ended in 2006.
He later pursued studies in Victorian literature at a prestigious university and has remained out of the public eye.
His on-screen mother, Kaczmarek, previously confirmed that he is doing well but was never interested in continuing in the entertainment industry.
The upcoming special will take the family’s dysfunction to new levels, as Malcolm—now a father himself—finds his life thrown into chaos when Hal and Lois summon him for their 40th wedding anniversary party.
Production is set to begin in Vancouver in the coming weeks.
While some fans may miss Sullivan’s presence, the return of the Wilkerson family (and their signature mayhem) is sure to bring a wave of nostalgia for longtime viewers.
